Meet Jontie + Pik

Sakina Design was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Jontie Karden and Kung Pik Liu. Through their own work and in collaboration with other artists, Jontie and Pik aim to highlight the beauty of Islamic art and ideas. Sakina Design is central to their effort, offering a unique collection of gifts and furnishings inspired by Islamic motifs.

  • Jontie Karden

Jontie Karden, MD is the talented President of Sakina Design, LLC. Although Jontie graduated with a biology degree from Cornell before earning a medical degree from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, he's always had a passion for culture, religion, history and art.

In 2009, Jontie pursued a creative path and created Sakina Design with his wife Pik. He further developed his artistic side in 2010, helping his wife establish Obsessive Compulsive Designers | OCD, a multicultural branding studio located in Southern California.

In addition to their joint artistic endeavors, Jontie and Pik are happily raising a daughter together.

  • Kung Pik Liu

Kung Pik Liu is the gifted Creative Director of Sakina Design, LLC. She converted to Islam in 2001, while studying graphic design at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Pik has become an advocate of Islam and Islamic art, sharing her admiration of Islamic traditions through her work at both Sakina Design and Obsessive Compulsive Designers | OCD, a multicultural branding studio located in Southern California.

Pik seeks to build a bridge across East Asian, Islamic and Western societies, and hopes her work will serve to promote intercultural and interfaith understanding. Her designs have found a harmony between Islamic and Western design.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Pik pursued her education in the US and the UK. After living in different American cities for a number of years, Pik finally settled in Southern California, where she and her husband are raising their daughter.

Pik holds a BFA with an emphasis in Communication Design from FIT. She also studied graphic design at the London College of Communication. Her work has been published in GDUSA, American Corporate Identity and the HOW Magazine blog.

You guys made my husband and I the happiest people on Earth! Our artwork arrived in Singapore in absolutely excellent condition. You really packed them meticulously. The shipping company you used was fast and convenient and even called me to schedule a time to drop off the package. I'm so happy! I can't wait to hang them up this weekend :) by Rufaihah AJ, Singapore - February 14, 2012
